Free Hosting? Why The Hell Not?

Often times people will tell me that they do not have enough finances to get a website going. I have always been an advocate of doing shit with minimal if not zero investment. So here is a couple of okays and nonos of hosting hunting.

First of all, never consider freewebs and geocities (is geocities still arround) and shit like that. Those sites offer very little features and are worse than having a myspace profile. It’s not a host, it’s a joke. In addition, those companies have very little censorship. Their terms of service are okay but not very enforced. Therefore, bunch of illegal content gets posted which search engines pick up immediately and blacklist. And when the host gets blacklisted, tada! you have been blacklisted as well. Good luck finding your websites on any search engines. This problem occurs on most free hosts anyways, but way less on some better ones.

MySQL Database, The Lord of Free Web Applications.

Pretty much no blog forum or CMS runs without this thing, so a host that doesnt provide one is as useful as freewebs. Plus, those hosts that do give a couple of MySQL databases are likely to have a kickass back end control panel for you. The best of em carry CPanel.

Now finding such an awesome host is no easy task. The web is literally full of hosts and you have no idea what to expect from any of them. Luckily I found my kickass host. This website is hosted on a free host, x10hosting. It kicks ass. It kicks more ass than most of the paid hosts I had in the past (except for hostmonster, that host was an expensive orgasm of hosting). Seriously. The only nag of the no-ad plan of their hosting is that you gotta visit their forums at least once every two weeks. It isn’t bad actually, that forum is really helpful with tutorials and tips and all, plus you can hire people for cheap to do dirty work.

On that note I leave you with a banner of x10hosting. Go sign up so I can get refferal points ;)

Snapping Out Of Hybernation

So I haven’t been active for a while, been sleeping a lot. Then sleeping more. Then reinstalling windows and linux like 10 times. Sleep. Did I mention sleep? Oh and Crysis, which now forces me to use the letter y a lot. I played the damn thing for like 30 times and I still think its cool, the first part that is, it’s shit when you get to the alien cave, (except the gauss rifle you get after you get out, nice weapon). I’ll probably go off topic on that later.

What now interests me is my traffic figures. I put up a couple of link exchange ads on entre card and guess what, I got 152 fucking visits 3 days ago. I don’t think I ever had that many. And thats without me visiting a single time. So I guess this entre card thing is working but I got this problem I can’t quite figure out. Here it goes, WTF IS A DROP?! People drop me all the time but I can’t figure out what that shit is and what I am supposed to do. If someone knows this, please shed some light on the situation.

I have a few topics stuck in my head so I’ll write some m0ar when I have time. Which will probably be tomorrow. Stick arround folks.

Forums? Can’t touch that!

Site makers often jump into creating forums right away. Is this a good idea? NO! Installing a forum software and a bunch of categories is an easy task but it is not worth doing right away. I’ll go over several standards on forums.

  1. Unless you are sure that certain amount of people will be visiting your forum on regular basis don’t create a forum. Those visitors must also be genuinely interested with the site and not visiting just because they are friends of the site’s author.
  2. Forums are not a chat room or an IM client. Forums are for in depth discussions of topics presented on the site. Unless there is plenty to discuss, do not make a forum.
  3. Do not make too many categories at first, 2 or 3 will do.
  4. If anyone ever asks to be a mod, don’t make them one.
  5. You don’t need mods unless your forum exceeds 50 active users.
  6. Rule #1, no rules. Don’t try to sterilize a new forum, that’s just a repellent. Unless your forum is becoming an equivalent of /b/ in the terms of user idiocy, you will probably never need rules.
  7. Don’t host a board on a free forum host, those suck.

more guidelines will follow soon.

Finally something decent for eeepc

As you may know I have an eeepc 701. If you are familiar with the triple e, you know that the default gui is a joke, and if you disable gui and go into xandros you realize its shit. For some time I struggled to find a decent operating system for it. Windows being an overkill, I had to hunt for a linux distro. Ubuntu obviously is my ultimate choice of operating systems. The problem is nothing usually works on the bloody machine, especially the wifi and fn keys.

Now there is a decent choice, eeebuntu. A lot of groups attempted to disect ubuntu and make it fit on eee, but there is only 1 I know of that succeeded. So, eeebuntu. There isn’t a lot to say other than it’s an ubuntu that fits on the eee. Wifi and fn keys work, which is basically all that other distros were lacking. There is stillĀ  a few minor issues, but those are being worked on.

There are two versions, standard and nbr (netbook remix). Apparently the nbr is version that is designed for ultra mobile PCs. I went with the standard because I don’t like retarded shiny interfaces with big icons.

Here is the bad part: the thing is kinda bigĀ  for the triple e. default install was 2.6 gigs or so. Now I dont really have problem with it myself, I got a 4g model and most of my stuff is online (yes I dont even use an office productivity software, I use google docs) but people with 2g and surf models are out of luck.

In the past two days I have been peeling all the unneeded software that comes with the operating system. This is one of those small things I hate about GNU/Linux, all desktop environments come preloaded with a lot of software that you really might not need. KDE and Gnome are the prime examples of this. I’d prefer a minimal, working, operating system that leaves the app installing to me. After all there is an add/remove entry in the menu that allows easily finding and installing pretty much every software there is for linux.

Maybe there should be a stripped down version of Gnome or something… Anyways I’ll try to pitch some ideas, see how the development of this thing goes.

Low Budget Tools For Making Web Sites

You don’t have to be loaded on the most expensive and top of the line equipment to create great work (although top of the line stuff kicks ass). Here is a list of some free applications you can use for website making.

First order of business, if you haven’t already, change your bullshit browser to Firefox. Firefox is more secure, more standards compliant and is a must have for a web guy. After aquiring firefox, get some essential extensions for it.

1. Web Developer Toolbar (this one is a must)
2. IE view (MS Windows only. Useful for checking how the site looks in internet explorer)
3, Firebug (no firefox 3 version out yet, but quite useful in debugging)

Now that firefox is all set and ready to go, time to get your hands on a text editor. Notepad will do but it’s not so pleasant which is why I recommend notepad++

Money spent on the tools: $0.00

Image Editors On A Budget

Option 1: Paint.NET

No it’s not the paint that comes with your windows pc. This cool little tool is perfect for small scale image touch up or just making basic stuff.

Very lightweight and works quite well. One drawback is it relies on .Net framework. This means that it wont work with anything other than windows (even though some people have been successfull compiling it under mono).

Get Paint.NET!You can download the official version here. You will need .Net framework 2.0 or above for this to work.

The list of free image editors is quite large so I will just name paint.net and it’s competitor.

Option 2: GIMP

Some reffer to this thing as the wholy grail of image editors. It is said that the image editor has so many powerful features that it’s comparable to photoshop or as some fans state even better.

In my opinion anyone who compares GIMP to Photoshop is an inbreed. However GIMP looks promising. I only use it when I am on my Linux laptop. Let me just say that the interface can make you barf. It does get the job done though.

As most if not all stuff listed on this site, GIMP is also free. You can get a version for the operating system of your choice here: www.gimp.org

Just installed

I decided that I wanna go with a blog here so I can update more frequently as I am lazy up the arse when it comes to actually editing code. Or doing something else for that matter. Bear with me as I copy paste stuff from the handmade site to this blog thing.

Removing Watermarks

This is the most recently recorded tutorial on removing watermarks. I want to make things clear here, inbreeds and those who dont know photoshop are not the same, but some people who claim to be badass at photoshop but don’t know anything qualify as inbreeds.

I am not badass at it but I know my fair share. I thought it might be a good idea to share it with the others.

In the meantime, keep watching this 3 minute tutorial on a loop because I can’t find my earlier stuff and need to rerecord the old tutorials again. (click on the little square in the bottom right corner of the video to view full screen.)
